In 1905, a young entrepreneur by the name of Axel Johnson began tuning and repairing pianos in Minneapolis, MN.
With a natural aptitude for engineering, Mr. Johnson observed the burgeoning automatic mechanical music industry at the time and focused his practice toward servicing the new abundance of pneumatic devices, working for the Standard Pneumatic action company and the House of Baldwin as a service technician.
The youngest and most musically inclined of Axel's children, Richard, followed in his father's footsteps, opening R.J.
Leonard & Sons piano manufactury and restyling shop in Minneapolis on South Street. Richard's twin sons, Grant and Dick Leonard, saw their father's business through a resurgence of nostalgic interest in player pianos during the 1960's and 1970's. In 1975, they expanded the family business, opening restoration centers in Los Angeles and San Francisco.
It was here that Vincent Wukmir, great-grandson of Axel Johnson and founder of Vinnies Piano entered the family trade. Today, it is this legacy of a fourth-generation piano restoration that informs the unsurpassed quality, craftsmanship, and integrity of Vinnies Piano.
